In an eventful first two days of the NFL Draft, each of the twenty-five players in attendance got the chance to hear their name called, shake the commissioner’s hand, and have their first professional football press conference.
Here are the best quotes from the players in attendance shortly after they were selected in the 2013 NFL Draft.
“It was just a once-in-a-lifetime moment. I can’t even explain it. I’ve done so many things in my life but I don’t think any of them amount to what I just experienced out there. I’m proud to be a Jet”
-Geno Smith on being selected by the New York Jets
“Absolutely. They got rid of Jake Long. He’s with the Rams now. We all were anticipating it was Miami. We were already getting the hugs started kind of deal. And then after the chose Dion Jordan, I knew Philly was on the clock, and I had a really good shot of coming here.”
-Lane Johnson on Reacting to Miami Dolphins Trade up to 3rd Overall
“I was able to experience this last year with Coach Sumlin coming in. You saw how we did. That process with new coaching, Coach Bradley and how much energy he brings and what kind of coaching style he has, it’s going to be a great atmosphere to go play for him.”
-Luke Joeckel on going to the Jaguars with a new coach and GM
“Pretty much they had one of the Gas come and teach me like four team formations and they talked about five plays and the audivles and the different type of hot reads, and then I had to go upstairs with the offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach and put me on the board and call the play out and tell me coverage, and I had to draw up the whole play from the running back over to the wide receivers and any adjustments. He gave me an 85 [out of 100]. He told me that 15% [off], you lost the game, Tavon. So I got to get it to 100 percent next time.”
-Tavon Austin on His Visit to the Rams Pre-Draft
“It was fine. I had a mixed crowd , boos and yeas. They can change that in one game.”
-Sheldon Richardson on Jets reaction to his pick
“Geno is one of the first guys who came and gave me a hug when I was heading out to meet Roger Goodell. That says a lot about Geno’s character. I’ve known Geno since 10th grade. Wherever he goes, he’s going to have a great, successful NFL career. I’m just looking forward to it.”
-EJ Manuel on having Geno in the room when he got selected
