The General Manager position for the Trailblazers has been open since November, and now it seems to look like the search has been narrowed to two big names. Danny Ainge and Steve Kerr are the names that have popped up for the position, and I think personally Ainge would be a better hire than Kerr. Ainge would help rebuild Rip City through the draft and free agency the same way he operates for Boston.
Portland owner Paul Allen is known to make big name moves when picking a coach or a general manager, basically the same way he does with the other team Allen owns, The Seattle Seahawks. Due to history, I think it will be a close race for the job, as both have ties to the blazers. Both men played for the club, and it doesn’t get much more intimate than that.
The rumor is that Kerr, now with TNT, has said that “he wants more time with his family”, same old story. Didn’t Brett Favre and Roger Clemens use the family as a tool to resign his name from the family card? Or perhaps it’s a way to sustain time while privately negotiating a deal. Trailblazers President Larry Miller commented in the Oregonian news paper, that Dennis Lindsey from the Spurs, Neil Osshey from the Clippers, and Troy Weaver from OKC have also been interviewed for the general manager job and that the team is going to wait first for the G.M , then go after a new coach.
Whoever the Trailblazers sign as G.M and Coach, is expected to bring back a winning tradition to a historically great basketball organization, and it’s important that the new G.M and the club draft well, and sign a coach who knows how to manage and dedicate himself to the team we have in the Rose City.
