On Tuesday April 3rd the Seattle Seahawks unveiled their new Nike uniforms to the public. The new uniforms focus on the colors dark blue, gray, and neon green. This is a stark contrast to their 2011 uniforms consisting of metallic blue, white, and neon green. Insert sarcastic remark here.
For some reason, fans are always opposed to new uniforms. I remember hearing for a good year how the metallic blue jerseys were hideous compared to the vintage Seahawk colors they wore from ’78 to ’01. I for one am not part of that groupthink. To further sell home my point, take a quick second to Google the vintage Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo. The buccaneer literally looked like a drag queen who was winking at you with an apparatus in his mouth. So any “embrace the retro” arguments you present will be countered immediately with that fact.
The Seahawks newest jerseys are only mildly different than last years, and by midseason no one will care about the change. I, for one, am much more interested in how the team performs in the draft and the health of the injury-riddled offensive line.
Perhaps it’s because the Seahawks haven’t had a big free agent signing in the last week, and there is literally nothing else going on in Seattle sports until Friday night’s Mariner game against Oakland, but for some reason, Seattle fans are obsessed with this topic right now.
I’ve also heard the egregious argument that fans have to upgrade their jerseys now thanks to the NFL’s maniacal scheme to increase team apparel sales. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, nor do I think the sales will alter too dramatically. If you actually go to Seahawks games, you’ll see many a fan sporting their vintage Steve Largent, John L. Williams, and Jim Zorn jerseys. If anyone is going up to those guys and telling them to buy updated jerseys, they deserve to be shot in the face. Wear your vintage 1978-2011 Seahawks gear with honor friends. Show the world that you aren’t just some flash-in-the-pants, Marshawn Lynch fantasy loser, bandwagon, hop-on, tool. I mean, you are all of those things, but you are still a Seahawk fan through thick and thin. So stop acting like a teenage girl and complaining about what outfits the team is wearing, and act like a man.
