Beat The Weather: Your Home Gym

Fitness ExpertAs Oregonians, we know how discouraging it can be to look out the window and see that, once again, as it does nine or so months out of the year, it’s raining cats and dogs. When that happens it doesn’t matter how many resolutions we’ve made to “get out more” or “include pets in our exercise” or whatever … we’re probably not heading into the weather.

Indeed, rain can even seem like a good excuse to stay home from the gym (though exactly why is a puzzle that modern psychologists may never get to the bottom of). And the few months out of the year it’s not raining – like right now – it tends to be pretty sweaty in Oregon, which can also discourage. Instead of giving in, why not just make it impossible to avoid working out, no matter what the weather looks like? Introducing: the home gym.

Unlike many things in life, this is as easy to do as say, and doesn’t involve spending thousands of dollars on heavy machinery. Portland offers several great athletic stores where you can pick up the basics for a home gym for just a few bucks, like Sports Authority or REI. Follow the list below to get started right away, and next time your motivation is low because of rain or shine, you’ll be able feel the burn right at home in comfort and privacy.

What You’ll Need:

Yoga Mat: If you’re like most of us, then the idea of doing hard work on top of dirt and pet hair is fairly repellant. Instead put down a yoga mat: it works just as well for sit-ups and planks as it does for Downward Dog, and you’ll find the experience a lot more pleasant.

Five- or Ten-Pound Dumbbells: Adding some extra weight makes lunges, side bends, squats, and plenty of other exercises much more challenging. Not only that, but a small, cheap set of weights will do wonders for your arms and shoulders.

Resistance Bands: These are especially good for ensuring that all your joints are in good working order. Unfortunately, the American emphasis on running and high-impact sports as the exercise du jour can often lead to deteriorated joints and pain. Resistance exercises will fight that tendency.

Fitness Ball: Fortunately, this is a fad you can take to the bank. Fitness or Exercise Balls are amazing for strengthening your core, especially your abs. If you work from home or in a lax environment, you can even consider using it as your office chair to take strain off your lower back and work out all day.

Beating the weather doesn’t have to mean finding an extra room in your house or spending tons of money: it can be as simple as a few low-cost purchases and a corner in which to store them. Get started today: you’ll be glad you did tomorrow!
