Well, yesterday was Opening Day, and since the Mariners got a new jumbotron (the largest in MLB), the big kahunas upstairs thought it a good idea to open up the parking lots, and invite the whole city to Safeco Field to watch the Mariners take on John Jaso, and the Oakland Athletics. I went with a friend, and what a treat! The grass was green, the playerless field was huge, and around the promenade I attempted to be like Felix, and threw at a plastic catcher! Alas, I only reached 59MPH, but that induced a deep sense of appreciation—all was right with the world! Perfect games happen for a reason!
We ended up winning the game, 2-0. Felix pitched 7 2/3rds innings of shutout baseball, and Brendan Ryan was the offensive star, and player of the game. Just like the Mariners Opening Day record this year and last, his batting average was a perfect 1.000 after Day 1. He reached base safely in all 3 of his at-bats, walking twice, singling, and scoring a run.
The Opening Day lineup was as follows:
Franklin Gutierrez CF
Michael Saunders RF
Kendrys Morales DH
Michael Morse LF
Justin Smoak 1B
Kyle Seager 3B
Jesus Montero C
Dustin Ackley 2B
Brendan Ryan SS
Felix Hernandez RHP
The whole night was free, and as one passed through the wide open gates, fans were given, free—“TRUE TO THE BLUE”—t-shirts! How’s this for an ad? Tickets to Opening Day at Safeco: Free. Parking: Free. TRUE TO THE BLUE t-shirt (to add to a yellow Felixing King’s Court T): Free … and priceless! That’s just my take on it.
Cheers for the rest of the action coming this week! Take me out to the ballgame!
