Just the other day I was thinking about Oregon, not the Ducks even though that’s what most other people associate the state with. I wanted to know what Oregonians do not associate the state with (sorry, Beavers fans, but it’s not pretty for you). I simply asked anyone and everyone I knew that has never lived in Oregon what are the first three things you think of when I say “Oregon”? Going into this science fair of an experiment, my hypothesis was that some form of football, Oregon Ducks, and Nike would dominate the responses followed by something to do with trees or Portland; turns out I’m a prophet.
Football and the Ducks are king. Just under seventy percent of people who responded to my question had football or football uniforms couple with either Nike or the Ducks. This shouldn’t surprise anyone, with no NFL teams, no MLB teams, and the Blazers not doing much of anything in recent years. The Oregon Ducks primarily have been the poster child for sports in the state of Oregon; couple that along with the trending uniforms that will even pull in some interest from your wife, girlfriend, sister, or even mother and the only thing missing are some national championships.
But what does this all really mean? Well, it does show the importance of Oregon football to the state and how the Ducks have somewhat stolen the college football spotlight in the past several years. Stand up Oregonians, unless you are a Beaver, be proud of your Oregon Ducks. The next two highest responses were “hipsters” and “not being able to pump your own gas”. Let’s hope this Ducks football thing continues to work out for the years to come.
