Western Oregon University quarterback Ryan Bergman followed his highly impressive 413 yard performance at division 1 FBS Portland State with another strong outing against Simon Fraser last Saturday.  Completing 20 of 35 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns, the senior signal caller led the Wolves to a 38-14 victory, which included a 24 point second quarter.

Bergman’s accomplices were the usual suspects Paul Revis and Tyrell Williams who accounted for 197 yards of the damage with 90 and 107 yards respectively. Meanwhile running back Joe Harris continued with his reliable 2013 ways adding 82 yards on 13 carries.

SFU actually made a contest of things in the first half keeping the count a respectable 24-14 at the half. However, the Wolves defense held SFU to only 39 rushing yards and while Western Oregon did give up 410 yards through the air, the Clan turned the ball over 4 times and did not manage a to score at all in the second stanza.

Simon Fraser Head Coach Jacques Chadelaine said, “We got 28 first downs and 410 yards passing but we shot ourselves in the foot but at the end of the day, it’s like were looking for ways to lose.”

Chadelaine’s frustration is most likely the result of four years of futility against the Arn Ferguson coached Wolves. Ferguson has yet to lose to the Clan and Western Oregon remains the only GNAC school with a perfect record versus the Victoria BC based university.

Coach Ferguson, Bergman and these Wolves seem a bit underrated in the preseason GNAC rankings and at the moment remain outside the division two top 25. However the showing against Portland State, who gave FBS school Oregon State a reasonable contest, may have some pollsters looking out west soon enough.

Western Oregon kicks off its home opener against Central Washington (1-1) at McArthur field at 1PM this Saturday. It will be the two squads’ 52nd meeting, dating back to 1936.
