King Of The Cage Returns To Lincoln City In June

On Saturday, June 27th King of the Cage will be returning to Lincoln City with an action packed card featuring some of the Pacific Northwest’s hottest up and coming talent. The card will take place at The Chinook Winds Casino Resort and will be broadcast on MAVTV (Dish Network 248, DIRECTV 214). The card will have a 6:00 pm start time.

The bout order is as follows:

  • Main Event Strawweight: Glena Avila vs. Cheryl Chan
  • Co-Main Event Welterweight: Ben Egli vs. David Evans
  • Welterweight: Jake Smith vs. Jay Jackson
  • Featherweight: Damon Jordan vs. Gus Bessa
  • Bantamweight: Sean Gee vs. Journey Newson
  • Bantamweight: Joaquin Calderon vs. Jeremiah Davis
  • Welterweight: Jordan Melendrez vs. Justin Ellis
  • Featherweight: Abdul Kamara vs. Cass Bell
  • Bantamweight: Dylan Blakesley vs. Ian King
  • Welterweight: Bryan Walters vs. Jeremy Jones
  • Bantamweight: Lisa Spangler vs. Maria Corona
  • Bantamweight: Manny Arizmendi vs. Nathan Noble
  • Flyweight: Anna Chouinard vs. Joy Edewards

In the night’s main event, fan favorite Glena Avila returns to the cage following a tough split decision loss to Danielle Taylor for the King of the Cage strawweight title. The matchup with Taylor was incredibly physical and won’t be one that Avila forgets anytime soon. If Avila hopes to work her way into a rematch for the strawweight title, a quick and decisive win in Lincoln City will go a long way. As for Avila’s opponent, Cheryl Chan, it would seem that she is outmatched coming into the fight with Avila. While Chan did win her last fight by submission, it is also her only win as a professional. A win against a fighter as well rounded and well liked as Avila could certainly help her gain some recognition.

The co-main event features one of the most talked about up and coming fighters from Oregon, Ben Egli. Egli has been on a tear since going pro in 2013, amassing a 5-0 record and doing so in impressive fashion. In his five professional bouts, Egli has finished all of his opponents by submission inside the first round. Training at Gracie Technics Fight Academy in Beaverton has clearly given Egli an advantage on the mat and so far no one has had an answer for the submission ace. He is a fighter who could soon be knocking on the door of the UFC and fighting in an organization as well known as King of the Cage could go a long way in getting the attention of UFC officials. In this bout, Egli will be facing a rising star from Detroit, Michigan, David Evans. Evans is a heavy-handed fighter and is known for being remarkably athletic; he has good balance and could prove hard to takedown. If Egli can’t get the fight to the mat, Evans will be a threat with his accurate and powerful strikes. Be sure to pay close attention at the start of this fight; if you blink you just might miss the finish.

This card also features the return of the always-exciting Jake Smith. Smith has been out action for some time recovering from an injury but that doesn’t seem to be on his mind. I had a chance to ask him how he felt heading into the fight after the layoff and I’d say he didn’t seem bothered by it.

“It’s been a little bit of a layoff since my last fight but that doesn’t really matter much,” Smith said.  “At the end of the day me and my opponent agreed on a date and time and we are going to have a good ol’ fashion fist fight out in the school yard. One of us leaving with others lunch money, and I ain’t no punk.”

Smith’s return also gives the Rose City FC team member another chance to call out new UFC signee Phil “CM Punk” Brooks. Smith has been vocal in his desire to welcome Brooks to the world of professional MMA so don’t be surprised if he looks to call out the former professional wrestler.

This fight card features many of tomorrow’s stars from the Pacific Northwest; fighters like 7-0 Abdul Kamara, West Linn’s Gus “Bonzai” Bessa, Portland Thai Boxing’s Jordan Melendrez and many more. If you are wondering what the future of mixed martial arts looks like in Oregon, this card is a great representation. If you are looking for a great way to spend a warm summer day on June 27th, head out to the coast, enjoy a day at the beach and then stroll up to Chinook Winds to take in a night of fights that promises to bring even more heat to the summer.
