Need Something To Do This Weekend? Check Out Some Roller Derby!

One of the possibly overlooked sports in Portland is that of roller derby. While it may have a little smaller of a following than say soccer or basketball, it is a fierce sport and can be quite entertaining. The Rose City Rollers is the team here in Portland for women’s flat track roller derby. This group of fericious ladies is separated out into a few different teams. The travelling team, the Wheels of Justice, is the one that goes on the road and competes against other WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) teams and is currently ranked second in the nation. There are also four home teams which compete locally, and a couple of junior teams for young people.

There are a few roller derby events that will be happening over the next few days. The first, which will take place on Friday, September 18, is featuring Fresh Meat vs Rydell Belles. The Fresh Meat team is for new players and is used for drafting purposes to see which players will make it on to one of the other teams later on. The opposing team is from Salem.

Next, on Saturday, September 19, will be matches played by the junior home teams of the Rose City Rollers and is the season kickoff. All four of the junior teams will be playing in a season that will last through March. Ladies playing in these leagues are all between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

Finally, Sunday, September 20, we will see a match between the Rose City Wreckers, which is the recreational division of the Rose City Rollers, against Medford team Sis-Q Rollerz. Although not a pro team, the Wreckers are team designed to introduce ladies to the sport and give them a chance to try it out.

All of these games are sure to be fun to watch and will be held at the Oaks Amusement Park. Tickets range in price from $14-$20 (except for the Wrecker game, which is only $10) , making it an affordable way to watch an exciting sport. In addition, the September 18 Fresh Meat game will be donating some of the profits to Fire Fighters Local Fund 43, so its also a great way to support the community.
