Friday Field Trip: Everybody wants to be the Steelers

Every Friday, we venture out into the Web and pull in some of the best (and occasionally worst) Steeler related content on the Web. And here. we. go.

Every once in a while something crazy shows up in our email inbox. This is one of those things. Meet Kayvon.

Seriously, WTF. He’s lucky Troy didn’t go all Ray Lewis on him.

TO got released. Who really cares? Steve Young said the Steelers and Patriots would be good places for him to go. The Rooney’s will never, ever bring a guy like TO in to the locker room, so no worries. But Randy Moss and TO together wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the NFL.

The Packers are taking a real hard look at safety Anthony Smith. They are moving to a 3-4 (surprise, surprise) and thinking he could be a good fit for their new defense. Smith often drew the ire of Steeler Nation with his antics, but I also thought he had potential to be an important piece of the puzzle. The whole “guaranteed win” thing against New England last year ended up being the beginning of the end for 27 and I’m probably the only guy, but I feel kind of bad for him. I defended him last year during training camp too. Whatever, he’s not as good as Ryan Clark, but a hard hitting young safety isn’t a bad thing to have around.

Some dude at Bleacher Report lays out his reasons why Bryant McFadden should return to the Steelers. Here’s his key point:

The argument against this is that William Gay did a good job replacing McFadden while he was hurt. My comment to that is, so what?

Look, everybody would love to have McFadden back but it has to be at the right price. I’m not too terribly worried about him leaving because William Gay played so well. And he’s cheaper. I think the fact that Gay had such a great year definitely means something. If McFadden leaves, Gay is going to be able to step up and Kevin Colbert will just go out and find the next guy to begin gromming in the draft. In a perfect world, nobody leaves via free agency but any good team has to say goodbye to players sometimes and there are a lot more important guys to this team besides Bryant McFadden. Guys like Hines Ward and James Harrison need extensions, so the Steelers might have to take a hard line here.

Big congrats to 5 Golden Rings to getting a link and mention from the LA Times.

Lastly, the Ravens jealously of the Steelers has carried over into free agency. The Baltimore Scout page says the Birds should go after Marvel Smith (subscription only), and Baltimore Beat Down is begging for them to sign Bryant McFadden. Rumor has it that they couldn’t afford either so far because the entire budget was spent on Kleenex after the AFC Championship game.

Jagoffs.
