The Sharks ship is captainless.

Joe Thornton, Ryan Miller

Here in Minnesota, the Wild have been rotating their captaincy monthly for the past 10 years. I don’t really seem to appreciate the importance of the title (Wikipedia says that they are team leaders and get to talk to the referees! Can’t let just anyone do that!). On other teams, the role of Captain appears to be the most important thing ever. Take the San Jose Sharks, for example, where Patrick Marleau was stripped of his captaincy, perhaps to make way for a roster move that could see Marleau in another uniform.

Mark Purdy of the Mercury News wrote a lengthy missive on the topic. Marleau is gone! What are they going to do? Who are they going to make the new captain? The odds on favorite is Dan Boyle, but Joe Thornton and Joe Pawelski are also possibilities. (I only mention this because LD bet me I couldn’t work Joe Pawelski into a post. Free Tim Horton’s!) I come from a certifiably insane state when it comes to hockey, and we wouldn’t have paid the story this much attention.  I can’t imagine Canada, equally insane (if not more) would even care this much over a team captaincy. Oh, no, wait. They have a video.

I just want to go back to a world where the only Captain anyone worried about was Morgan.
