The Seattle Seahawks may have found the offensive firepower they need for the 2016 with the recent addition of Jimmy Graham last season. With 6 touchdowns and over 600 yards passing in only 10 games, he was on his way to having a stellar season. Rob Gronkowski, the other contender for dominance at the tight end position achieved 1,176, and Graham would have just nudged him out in passing yards had his season continued.
Graham suffered his knee injury in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers—a game where he had 8 catches for 75 passing yards—but he was tackled and suffered a patellar tendon tear that ended his season, which more than likely hindered the Hawks offence as they lost a valuable offensive weapon in the postseason.
“There’s a case to be made this offseason that the Seahawks should consider moving on from Jimmy Graham. In five games without him last season, the offense averaged 31.2 points per game, second in the NFL. Graham suffered a serious ruptured patellar tendon injury that is difficult to recover from. And releasing the 29-year-old tight end would create $9 million in cap space for 2016 and $10 million in 2017” said ESPN sportswriter Sheil Kapadia.
I don’t completely disagree with Kapadia’s opinion, financially it is a reasonable option when considering the salary cap and creating oportunity for acquiring new talent. However, I think it’s a much wiser choice to keep a player who has proven for years that he has exceptional talent and consistently put up fantastic numbers season after season. And who in their right mind would get rid of a tight end who runs a 4.7, can use his 6’7’’ stature to outplay the much shorter players in the secondary, and use the strength of his 265 beast man body to push around linebackers when blocking in the run game.
In contemplation of Kapadia’s opinion, I would more than disagree. But I don’t think Hawk fans have much to worry about. Pete Carroll and John Scheinder have the leadership and knowledge of the game to make the best decision for the team, and their decision to stick with a player that is more than a prospect that will know doubt benefit the team, and the Hawks chances for a Super Bowl run in 2016.
