Dolphins owner Stephen Ross didn’t want to recycle a former head coach when he set out to fill said vacancy in Miami.
So he hired 37-year-old Adam Gase, a first-time head coach who he thinks can be the next Bill Belichick or Bill Parcells, according to NFL.com.
The NFL’s youngest head coach, Gase comes to the Dolphins after four years as an offensive coordinator. He was the Broncos’ OC from 2012-2014, overseeing an offense that ranked second, first and second in points scored. Then in 2015 he went to Chicago and squeezed a career-best 92.3 passer rating out of Jay Cutler.
Of course, Ross doesn’t want Gase to follow Belichick’s career path to the letter. That would mean he leads the Dolphins to just one winning season in five years before getting fired. Then there’s the fact that Belichick is a defensive guru while Gase cut his teeth on offense.
Last year, the Dolphins made a splash by signing Ndamukong Suh. This year, they’re trying again to narrow the gulf between them and the Patriots by hiring a coach they hope is someday deserving of having his name near “Belichick” in print.
