A Nets great and the team's current coach will get one of the best team-specific honors possible in the NBA in a little more than a month at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.
Jason Kidd, who just can't seem to stay out of the news lately, was the face of the formely New Jersey Nets in the 2000s, a time when the team made back-to-back Finals appearances, losing to the Lakers and Spurs in 2002 and 2003 respectively. After his countless on-court successes with the Nets, he achieves a major off-court one with the retiring of his jersey by the franchise.
The seventh Net to have his uniform number enshrined in the Barclays rafters after Wendell Ladner, Bill Melchionni, John Williamson, Drazen Petrovic, Buck Williams, and, of course, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Kidd is easily one of the most recognizable players to be associated with the Nets and undoubtedly deserves to be mentioned among the franchise's greats.
The jersey-raising ceremony will take place on October 17th, during the Nets preseason contest vs the Heat, a questionable choice considering that the honor would be likely earn more attention if held during the regular season. But, according to New York Daily News Nets beat writer Stefan Bondy, Kidd didn't want the ceremony during games that counted because of the distraction it would cause him from coaching his team. An admirable star, through and through.
