Most Nets fans won't be able to see it, but the Brooklyn Nets have their third preseason game of the year tonight as they head down the New Jersey Turnpike to Philadelphia to take on the 76ers. The contest, which is only going to be aired on Philly TV–not the YES Network–is one in which many Nets won't be participating, as the team is going through a rash of injuries.
Deron Williams (ankle), Andrei Kirilenko (back), Tyshawn Taylor (ankle), Jason Terry (knee), Jorge Gutierrez (ankle), and Toko Shengalia (knee) are all out with their respective ailments while Paul Pierce is sitting tonight due to a scheduled rest day for the 35-year-old swingman.
That means Shaun Livingston and Alan Anderson will be in the starting lineup in the place of Deron and Pierce. End-of-the-bench guys like Mason Plumlee, Gary Forbes, Chris Johnson, and Marko Jaric will probably get a lot of playing time in Philly this evening.
Philadelphia, projected by many pundits to be among the worst in the NBA, is an extremely young team, as it only has two players over the age of thirty–Kwame Brown (31) and Jason Richardson (32)–both of which are currently sidelined due to injury. The 76ers have a stunning seven (SEVEN) rookies on their roster right now, with two of them being lottery picks from the 2013 Draft (Noel and Carter-Williams) who are expected to be big part of the Philly attack this season.
More established guys, who still are relatively young for NBA terms, like Thaddeus Young, Evan Turner, Lavoy Allen, and Spencer Hawes–to name a few–round out the roster for new coach Brett Brown, hired this summer after spending seven seasons as an assistant with the Spurs. Not a lot of starpower for the 76ers equates in what probably will be a long and unsuccessful 2013-14 campaign filled with lots and lots of losses.
Probable Lineups
BKN- Shaun Livingston (PG), Joe Johnson (SG), Alan Anderson (SF), Kevin Garnett (PF), Brook Lopez (C)
PHI- Michael Carter-Williams (PG), James Anderson (SG), Evan Turner (SF), Thaddeus Young (PF), Spencer Hawes (C)
Final Thoughts
A lot of rotation guys aren't going to be in action for the Nets tonight so this game won't be the most accurate representation of this team's true character. Regardless, it will be a nice showcase for the players who are desperately fighting to earn a spot on the roster when the preseason ends and the regular season begins.
