Netlinked 5/26/14: Blatche close to joining Filipino National Team, Plumlee named to NBA All-Rookie First Team, Buck Williams may return to Nets

Since their elimination in the second round of the playoffs at the hands of the Heat, the Nets haven’t really been featured in the news much as they’re waiting for the postseason to end and for the actual offseason to begin. However, some smaller tidbits of information have trickled out about Brooklyn’s team in the past few weeks:

It appears as if Andray Blatche’s attempt to play for the national basketball team of the Philippines is going to become a reality. A bill that would grant Blatche citizenship is being presented to the country’s president and unless he vetoes it, which he probably won’t, Blatche will be allowed to play the Filipino national team in the upcoming World Championships. No, I don’t get how a Syracuse, NY native is going to play for the Philippines in international play, either.

Mason Plumlee, picked 22nd overall by the Nets in 2013’s weak Draft, was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie first-team recently, a pretty amazing honor for the Duke product. He may not have contributed a ton in the playoffs, but Plumlee was a surprisingly key piece of Jason Kidd’s regular season rotation, and even preserved a Brooklyn win over the Heat with a game-saving block on LeBron. He wasn’t expected to help out much on this heavily veteran Nets team, but Mason was enormous with his 11th-in-the-NBA dunk total and overall solid rebounding and interior defense. The sky’s the limit for him.

We end this version of Netlinked with an update on a former Net great who may return to the organization. There has been some talk that the Nets may hire Buck Williams, who was a three-time All-Star during his Nets tenure (from 1981-1989) and whose number 52 is retired by the team, to either a player development or public relations position. Although it probably wouldn’t be for a hugely important job, bringing Buck back to the franchise would be a nice, nostalgic move by the Nets to honor one of their better all-time players.
