Washington Redskins legend and Hall of Famer John Riggins suggested on his radio show today that Head Coach Joe Gibbs would step away from coaching after this season. What’s interesting is that Riggins correctly predicted that Steve Spurrier would leave the Redskins at the end of the 2003 season. From a distance, Riggins sensed and said that the Old Ball Coach looked frustrated with his entire experience with the NFL. Riggins played for Gibbs. He may be on to something, although I’m not sure how close they are now. If Gibbs should step away, my favorite coach candidate will be across the field Sunday when the Cardinals visit. Russ Grimm has history here, coaching experience, was a lineman like Gibbs and Joe Bugel, so he has a better grasp of the game. Like Gibbs, Grimm is already honored in the Redskin Ring of Fame at FedEx Field. What Grimm lacks is the big name cachet favored by the owner. If only his name were Russ Cowher. Grimm is a much better name for a footballer.
