It’s almost as big a shock to me as it is to him!
Football wise man Larry Weisman has parted ways with the Washington Redskins. Weisman covered the NFL for 30 years and was a respected sports writer.Like most fans, he came to my attention when he covered the NFL for USA Today. He joined Redskins.com two seasons ago and was instantly the brightest luminary in its stable of writers.
Weisman’s portfolio was Editorial Director of the Media Department.
Weisman posted this on his Facebook page this afternoon:
“Today was my last as editorial director of Washington Redskins media. I enjoyed two seasons with the club but am no longer affiliated. I’ll be back with a new gig soon enough and I’ll still muse about football here. But no more official Redskins tag. Thanks for following. New twitter handle: MrLarryWeisman”
The move came as a suprise to Weisman. I’ve not heard of any fueds between he and the team as with former Washington Post writer Jason LaCanfora. Weisman brought instant credibility to Redskins.com when he joined Gary Fitzgerald and Matt Terl as staff writer. Weisman had moxy that came from years of football observation. He was insightful while being candid in his commentary about team developments.
Yipes. I hope candor was not his undoing. If the Redskins did not encourage self-critiques, neither did they did not appear to suppress it, not on Redskins.com, nor Redskins Nation television show nor on the team-owed fan site Extremeskins.com. Candor overcame suspicion of those Redskins channels.
We’ll have to be alert to any changes in that direction out of Redskins Park.

Redskins.com does not have a story about Weisman’s departure. Only Fitzgerald and Terl are listed as team writers. The team site carries the April 21 story of the three writers weighing in on the 2011 schedule. Weisman’s Redskins Blitz Twitter account (twitter.com/larryweisman) is no longer available.
LaCanfora, personna non grata at Redskins Park, moved on to the NFL Network. Surely something good will happen for Weisman.
