Less than a month after trading Andrei Kirilenko to the Philadelphia 76ers for him, the Nets have requested waivers on BYU product Brandon Davies, effectively ending the forward’s stint in Brooklyn.
The second-year pro, whose contract was not guaranteed, appeared in just seven games for the Nets in sporadic, and mostly garbage time, minutes. He scored just 16 points as a Net on .333/.250/.750 shooting and wasn’t particularly bad with the team, but didn’t do enough good in the limited playing time to justify a roster spot.
The move opens up a roster spot for the Nets–for a possible trade in the new few weeks?–as well as shaving a bit off Brooklyn’s gargantuan luxury tax bill. Not too interesting stuff, but it gives Billy King some more flexibility both on a financial and personnel standpoint as we head into the trade deadline season.
Davies hadn’t appeared in a game since December 30th’s Nets win over the Bulls and had played only eight total minutes since December 19th. Once acquired, he got some run from Lionel Hollins, who eventually phased him out of the rotation as Sergey Karasev started to play better.
For Davies, I’m not really sure what’s up next. There’s a chance a team picks up for a 10-day contract once those can be signed but there probably won’t be a ton of interest for the second-year pro. He’s a lanky 6-9/6-10 who isn’t a bad rebounder but doesn’t provide a ton of spark on either end of the floor.
