Introducing Your Next Quarterback of the Redskins: Robert Griffin, III

Robert Griffin III

My friends at DC Pro Sports Report remind me that the Washington Redskins season ended for fans several weeks ago. There are four games to go, of course. But, the ‘Skins will face the New England Patriots Sunday without their two best offensive players.

DCPSR and many, many fans turn their attention to our favorite off-season activity – Mock Drafts. A lot of smart people see QB Robert Griffin, III, (Baylor) as the Redskins’ top 2012 Draft pick. We do not see a lot of Big 12 games in the DC area unless it involves Texas or Oklahoma. Baylor? Never.

We think some introductions of RG3 are in order for Redskins fans.

First up, a 4:27 video of Griffin highlights seen on BaylorBears.com.

Next, sports writer Cory McCartney, SI.com, makes the case that Griffin should win the Heisman Trophy:

“‘Most outstanding?’ That’s RG3, a former All-America hurdler who has emerged as the most dynamic player in the nation. You want stats? He broke Colt Brennan’s single-season NCAA pass efficiency record with a 192.3 rating, finished second in the FBS in total offense (386.8 yards per game) and averaged a stunning 36.6 yards on his 36 touchdown passes.”

Griffin is a fourth-year junior, but has already graduated from Baylor University.

The Baylor Bears (9-3, 6-3 Big-12) will play the Washington Huskies (7-5, 5-4 Pac-12) in the 2011 Valero Alamo Bowl, 8:00 PM CST, December 29, ESPN.

Rivals.com – Heisman race too close to call. Olin Buchanan says Griffin is a long shot for the Trophy.

Daniel Eliesen writes in the This Given Sunday blog that the Redskins, stuck in a four-win rut, are well positioned to make the second pick for a quarterback in the 2012 Draft. He sees Griffin or Matt Barkley (USC) as targets. Washington just has to beat out Cleveland and Miami to win this race. As we know, Washington holds the tiebreaker advantage over Miami. (Sigh) The Dolphins are degrading their Draft position by playing good football.

If Griffin wins the Heisman, it would be conceivable that he would hurdle Andrew Luck as the No. 1 Draft pick. In that unlikely event, Luck would be available for the next team with a quarterback need.

NFL teams are not as impressed by the Heisman as we are and GMs do not play Mock Drafts. They pay more attention to the NFL Combine. Accept these mock drafts as no more than the wisdom of the crowds. RHH is not (yet) endorsing RG3. We pointed out yesterday that the ‘Skins have more pressing needs at wide receiver and running back. This is early off-season due diligence. Otherwise, we’d have to write about Redskins vs. Patriots.
