The dust is settling on last week’s Washington Redskins adventure; it is clear that the 2012 Shanaplan was to find the quarterback first. Everything else would fall into place once that was done.
A few stories circulated that top free agents were reluctant to come to Washington because of, well, Rex Grossman and John Beck. Shanahan faced a problem getting the players he wanted until he upgraded at quarterback.
Thus, the Redskins treated fans to the courting of Peyton Manning and the bidding war for the St. Louis Rams’ spot in the NFL Draft. The Redskins were determined to win one or the other.
The trade deal is done. Prepare to be amazed at what comes next.
Rich Tandler’s post on csnwashington.com today quotes GM Bruce Allen who said the team paid “a heavy price” for “an excellent football player.” The video of Allen that accompanies the story alludes to the offseason blueprint the front office developed in January.
Translation — this ain’t over yet. The Redskins are in for the biggest makeover since Allen’s dad turned the trick in 1971. Only this time, we’re not talking about any over-the-hill players. The free agent market is target rich and Washington has the cap room to sign them. Certainty at quarterback fixes the path the Redskins now will follow.
