Kyle Shanahan high on RB Tristan Davis

Tristan DavisI admit to skepticism about running back Tristan Davis, who has been touted by Redskins Hog Heaven lurker and contributor Scott Hirsch. (See Tristan Davis chases his dream….) I could not see how Davis could crack the line-up with Tim Hightower, Evan Royster, Roy Helu in front of him, and with rookie Alfred Morris in the way. Hirsch had faith and strongly so.

Davis got an endorsement from a surprising source, Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan who had this to say, per John Keim’s Redskins Confidential:

“I have been really excited about Tristan [Davis]. That was really like the second day practice, because he had some injuries. He is a little behind the eight-ball in that he missed the first week of camp. But, like Helu, Tristan is fast. You saw that at the fan day. We got him in a coverage there bluffing a blitz and he just ran. The guy kind of came out and got to him and it was a house call [touchdown]. When you have a guy with that type of speed, when the right play is on, it’s a touchdown instead of just a ten yard gain. So, you always want those guys out there. Tristan is just more getting experience with carries and stuff, so when he doesn’t have those looks he’s still getting those four yards, five yards not just zero yards.”

That’s no guarantee Davis makes the team, or makes an impact if he does. But, this coaching staff made something out of Keiland Williams and Ryan Torain, both more successful with the Redskins than anywhere else. Mr. Hirsch thinks Davis could be lethal in the Red Zone.

I just want somebody, anybody, to be lethal in the Red Zone. Please.

Various reports say Davis will not suit up for the Buffalo Bills exhibition game tomorrow.
