You knew there would be repercussions from the ugly loss in Houston. Bacarri Rambo’s whiffed attempt to tackle DeAndre Hopkins and Barry Cofield’s high ankle strain were triggering events.
The Redskins moved Cofield to the Injured Reserve list with designation to return later this season. DE Chris Baker will move to nose tackle. The team lost for the season back-up NT Chris Neild to a knee injury during preseason.
The Redskins signed S Akeem Davis to the roster from the practice squad. He joins Duke Ihenacho who the Redskins claimed off waivers before game one. We saw Ihenacho as a potential backfill to S Brandon Meriweather who is on a two game suspension.
The ‘Skins started Rambo for Meriweather against the Texans. Rambo has not translated the potential he shows in practice to the big stage. The coaches will give a good look to Ihenacho and Davis before the Jaguars game.
How could they not? Hog Heaven sees them as stopgaps, not as solutions, however.
Rambo was a 2013 sixth-round Draft pick. Ihenacho and Davis entered the league as unsigned free agents. NFL starters typically do not rise from that rank (yeah, yeah, yeah, Alfred Morris, blah, blah, blah).
The intriguing question is will any of them give the Redskins reason to keep them when Meriweather returns.
NFL teams mine the first and second round of the Draft for young talent that are immediate starters. Third and fourth-rounders should become valued contributors in two or three seasons. The rest are fodder for special teams and practice squads. The Redskins have practice squad-caliber players at strong safety.
Would Ryan Clark, who played with Sean Taylor and Troy Polamalu, repeat his statement that the Redskins have the strongest secondary he has ever played on?
Hog Heaven suspects even Clark did not take that seriously.
Now Davis is a Redskin. Hail to you, sir. You carry our hopes for success.
CB Richard Crawford has been on and off the Redskins roster for some time now, so we aren’t surprised that the Redskins released him again. Hog Heaven suspects it was not a talent decision, but more to make room for other players added to the practice squad.
One of them is 6-4, 240 lb. TE, Je’Ron Hamm. The Saints saw him as a project as he attempted a switch from wide receiver to tight end (sounds familiar). Hamm was an undrafted free agent with the Saints trying to be noticed in the NFL.
The Redskins were paying attention. They could be down one tight end with Jordan Reed out for some time. The Hog Heaven over/under on Reed’s return is three weeks. I’m taking the over.
Meanwhile, this nola.com story about Hamm might entertain you.
I am surprised that the Redskins released WR Nick Williams from the practice squad. He was speedy and had good hands. His size at 5-10 may have been an issue. Size is the only reason I can think of why Leonard Hankerson (6-2) is still on the roster.
