Brian Orakpo
NFL.com reports say Brian Orakpo will go on Injured Reserve and lost to the Redskins for the season. ‘Rak tore his right pectoral muscle in the Titans game. He twice tore his left pectoral muscle. He doesn’t have the pecs for the job.

What now, Jim Haslett? Heavy doses of Trent Murphy, I guess.
Kirk Cousins
I feel for Kirk Cousins, but Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio would not have put up with his performance for as long as Jay Gruden has. Gruden had no choice. Dantonio didn’t need to. In the three seasons I’ve followed Cousins as Spartans quarterback, I never saw him perform like this. Hog Heaven is disappointed in him and more disappointed for him.
Cousins has an NFL future. It will be guided by circumstance now, not by doors opening for him. Whatever his future, he can still work toward it.
Kirk Cousins benched, Colt McCoy will start until RG3 is cleared http://t.co/kLtHFQx0Tw

Jay Gruden
If you want to shake up your people, fire somebody. It’s a tried and true management technique. Coach Gruden benched Kirk Cousins after his second quarter interception gave the Titans great field position and a go-ahead touchdown five plays later.
That technique has a short-term effect and it can lead the workers to look over their shoulder instead of applying their nose to the grindstone. Maybe that’s what these guys need. Coach has their undivided attention this week.
Bruce Allen
What lessons did the Redskins draw from managing RGIII’s injury last year? They will be tested now. The rush to start Griffin early in 2013 was a breakdown of judgment by everyone, owner, football czar, GM, medical staff, the player and his dad. (RGJr is low profile this year.)
Hot Heaven is encouraged by the low-key updates to Griffin’s health. That is a sign of growth now here comes the test. Colt McCoy may have to start in Dallas (Gasp). The ‘Skins may pronounce Griffin healthy Wednesday morning before he practices. I exaggerate, but you get the point. The Redskins are prone to take shortcuts. The move to McCoy is tactical. Allen is the one to reassure coach and owner that it is better to take the strategic path concerning Griffin.
The ‘Skins play seven games after the Week 10 BYE. They have clinched the playoffs with a seven-win streak before. Fans expect a seven-game run whenever Griffin returns. His health better be right.
Things go better with Colt. See what I did there? #Redskins

Colt McCoy
The back-up quarterback is the most popular man in town, they say. Colt McCoy is the toast of DC after leading the Redskins to an ugly 19-17 win over the struggling Titans. In that respect, he’s done a good imitation of Kirk Cousins to come off the bench to win a game. Expect him to start in Dallas. We are skeptical that RGIII will be ready to play by then.
To those who think the Redskins are saved, consider this. McCoy is 6-15 as a starter for a poor Cleveland team. He threw 21 touchdowns to 20 interceptions for Cleveland with a 58.3 completion rate. He has a career 76.1 passer rating. In his first eight games (2010), McCoy threw six touchdowns and nine Interceptions for a 60.8 percent completion rate and a 74.5 passer rating.
In 14 games (8 starts), Cousins has 18 touchdowns to 19 interceptions with a 59.0 percent completion rate and a 77.5 passer rating. Cuz is 0 for 8 as a starter, which is the critical stat. His turnovers have been spectacular.
Two conclusion here.
- McCoy is a more experienced, more expensive by salary, Cousins.
- The Redskins have depth at the position. McCoy stepped in and it led to a win. Shanahan kept two quarterbacks. McCoy is available for the Redskins with no drop off from Cousins. Before you scream “step-up,” we don’t know how well McCoy or RGIII would have performed in the Gruden offense. “No drop off” is a positive.
Tandler, Real Redskins: Good start and finish for McCoy, but issues in between.
