Wait. Daniel Snyder has all that money to pay fired coaches, but not enough to hire a frickin’ quarterback coach?
Jason Reid from the Washington Paper speculates (repeat: speculates) that Redskins head coach Jay Gruden could be fired if team president Bruce Allen and owner Daniel Snyder force his hand on Robert Griffin III. SI.com picked up the story.
Mike Shanahan took 13 games to bench Robert Griffin III and four years to get himself fired as Redskins head coach with one year left on his contract.
Gruden took four games to bench Robert and may get himself fired with four (4) years left on his contract.
Forget about players coming to Washington to get paid. Coaching for Mr. Snyder is the fastest way for a young head coach to get rich.
Hog Heaven is not sure this story is remotely true. Reid is so down on the Redskins that everything he writes comes out negative. We are no longer dismissive of these reports, however.
We’ve made two points to our readers about this organization.
- It is not Gruden’s fault if he is here because of a poorly thought out process. The Redskins are rife with flawed thinking. Make no mistake, Gruden’s offense is a bad mix with RGIII.
- In conflicts about whom to play, the owner must back the coach.
The ghost of Jim Zorn
Gruden has a lot more in common with Jim Zorn than candor. They were hired in similar circumstances.
Zorn won the through a flawed process led by Vinny Cerrato.
Cerrato could not sell better candidates on taking the Redskins carry-over assistants. The candidates were not offered the option of picking their own quarterback. Zorn’s mission was to fix Jason Campbell.
Zorn was the only candidate given the privilege of naming his own OC. He picked Stephen Smith who never served in that capacity. Zorn served as his own quarterback coach. Gruden is Jim Zorn all over. Zorn was 8-8 his first season.
Gruden is famous for being someone’s brother. Arena League coaching is similar to being a BINGO caller. (This is dismissive of Gruden’s and Sherm Lewis’ background depth, but I am making a point here.) He came to a team with a prebuilt staff. He had to fix the quarterback he did not choose. He is the do-it-yourself QB coach. Meh.
This is a management issue
When conflicts arise in business, the owner backs the manager who has the expertise. In conflicts over who plays, you must back the coach.
This is a business principle. It must be done to keep the inmates from running the asylum. It must be in plain view of everyone, from the guys on the practice squad to the front office leaders.
Hog Heaven is not a fan of how Gruden was chosen, but Gruden is the coach. He is the horse Snyder should ride for the sake of good management.
Well-managed conflicts can be incredibly productive. You learn and grow from them. Managing this one well falls on president and GM Bruce Allen.
If anyone is fired for this debacle, it should be Allen. Allen is more responsible for Gruden’s presence here than Snyder.
You'd think that a team that hired 6 coaches since 2000 would be good at it. Not the Redskins. Sheesh http://t.co/GjOe0HxmcY via @SInow

It’s the Redskins!
We are treating this incredible story with credibility because of the owner. Hog Heaven does not put Gruden’s dismissal beyond the range of Daniel Snyder because we seen this type move before.
This will end badly and then it will get worse.
Point after
Snyder probably should have hired Gregg Williams to be coach in 2008. It is clear that they would not have played well together. Williams returns to FedEx Field Sunday as Rams defensive coordinator.
Williams has a Super Bowl ring. Daniel Snyder does not.
