Redskins hint Robert Griffin III is no bargain for Premium fans

Yesterday we gave faint praise to Robert Griffin III for dialing back his time on social media. The Redskins took a different approach today.

DC Sports Bog wrote that the Redskins mailed a letter to Premium Club members saying that,

“Head Coach Jay Gruden, new General Manager Scot McCloughan, and Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry will lead a nucleus of Ryan Kerrigan, DeSean Jackson, plus Pro Bowlers Trent Williams and Alfred Morris. The Redskins are poised to rebound next season!”

Dan Steinberg, chief “bogger” at DCSB makes an issue of Griffin’s absence from the list. He did not make an issue of the absence of Brian Orakpo or Roy Helu, Jr.

DC sports talk radio makes a talking point of RGIII’s omission. Should it be?

Take a break from promoting Robert Griffin III

Griffin is the most controversial player on the team now. His 2012 classmates, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson avoided injury, get along with their coaches and led their teams to three playoffs in three seasons, with Wilson going 1-1 in two Super Bowls.

Wilson is having the career Hog Heaven saw for RGIII.

Neither Luck nor Wilson would have done as well in Washington. We are such a mess.

Griffin’s problems are of his own making. Couldn’t get along with his coach? Joe Theismann drove to Joe Gibb’s house unannounced to hash things out. Together they won championships.

Suffered injuries? RG ran his way into those injuries. He bust his ankle at the end of an awkward, unathletic jump pass unexpected from an elite collegiate hurdler. Coaches teach you to stay on your feet and step into your pass. No one tells you to jump. The Peytons and the Aarons he admires don’t do that. Neither the Russells nor the Toms do that.

By agitating to become a pocket passer, RG pouted his way into a three-year development project where once he was the most feared player in the league.

RG handles adversity poorly. He may yet become a top-tier NFL starting quarterback, but the question must still be asked.

Is the franchise QB on the roster?

It is not safe to promote any of the current Redskins quarterbacks as poised for a rebound. RG has one more year to show whether he becomes Tom Brady or another Vince Young. We hope he steps towards Brady … as we have done for the past two seasons.

Kirk Cousins future lays elsewhere, if not before this season then at the end of it when his contract expires.

Colt McCoy is already a free agent. The Redskins are the only team where he has a chance to start. He is the most easily replaceable talent of the bunch. (The 49ers released him to keep Blaine Gabbert.)

None of these guys are under contract for 2016.

It is no big deal, that the Redskins promote Scot McCloughan, Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Williams as players leading the rebound.
