What happens when you combine the words “Cousins,” “Gruden” and “offseason drills?” You get crappy DC Sports Bog stories like “Kirk Cousins is doing offseason drills with Jon Gruden.”
Hey, drawing highly speculative conclusions from football factoids in the desert between the Super Bowl and the NFL Combine is my job.
Draw no speculative conclusions from this story. It reveals what we already know; that Kirk Cousins is a right guy who helps in the community. In this case, Cousins, along with Alfred Morris, participated at the Carrollwood Day School football camp at the when Jon Gruden was a volunteer coach.
DCSB quoted the more reliable Chris Russell who reported that Cousins did spend several full days with Gruden on something.
If the elder Gruden “worked” with Cousins is was likely in the form of tips and advice for getting out of Jay Gruden’s doghouse.
Tips are not the same as coaching.
There’s a strict firewall between NFL coaches and players during the offseason. Any whiff that Jon is a surrogate for Redskins head coach Jay Gruden to coach up Cousins will draw the wrath of both the league and the union. Even the Redskins too smart to skirt the rules in so obvious a way.
The same story said Cousins was running drills with independent QB coach Jeff Christiansen. That’s something, but is it significant?
Last year, we read with glee that Robert Griffin III worked the offseason with QB mentor Terry Shea who predicted a bounce back year for RG. Then the 2014 season happened.
I learned my lesson.
Imitation bacon does not taste like bacon. Only bacon tastes like bacon. A few offseason days with a QB coach is imitation bacon. Only game action is the real thing.
This is better use of Kirk’s football time than drinking beer at the beach. Draw no conclusions beyond that.
DC Sports Bog’s lede line was slightly misleading. I would rather read a story that Jon Gruden was working with brother Jay to become a better head coach.
THAT would be welcome news.
