Scot McCloughan, the Redskins’ new superstar GM, has made it clear that he is excited about the undrafted free agents (UDFAs) available this year. There are several that will show up in rookie camp this weekend.
Standouts include Offensive Tackle Takoby Cofield, DE Corey Crawford, QB Conner Halliday, RB Trey Williams, TE Devin Mahina and ILB Terrance Plummer. But don’t discount the others.
The #Redskins today kick off rookie minicamp for 65 roster hopefuls.

Scot knows his basic math and the culture he wants. Undrafted rookies are usually very hungry and work very hard if they get their lucky break. Scot has signaled that he wants undrafted players on his roster.
Don’t be surprised to see Takoby Cofield leapfrog both Tom Compton and Morgan Moses. Don’t be shocked if Halliday beats out McCoy or Cousins (amazing how much time and travel Scot put into this undrafted free agent). Don’t be shocked if Trey Williams beats out Chris Thompson and maybe even Silas Redd.
UPDATE: The Redskins have parted ways with Connor Halliday.

…the simple math is to get more UFDAs on the roster, so that Scot can give players like Trent Williams and Ryan Kerrigan their expensive contract extensions.

The old style Redskins management of keeping players like Logan Paulsen because they are loyal to the coaches are (hopefully) gone. There may actually be a competition that is not rigged from the beginning due to the egos of the coaches and their horrific free agency overspends last year like Porter, Roberts, Lauvao.
Don’t be surprised if a target number of 3-5 UFDAs make the roster. They are inexpensive, and I believe the simple math is to get more UFDAs on the roster, so that Scot can give players like Trent Williams and Ryan Kerrigan their expensive contract extensions.
Imagine that! The Redskins grooming and keeping talent instead of fawning over flashy, discarded players from other teams. Perhaps half of the appeal of these players is that they were not on the dysfunctional Redskins.
The final total roster number of late round draftees and UFDAs will reflect how much power the new GM has and whether the culture has really changed.
