Redskins are looking at generously a 6-10 season, but there are positives

Scot has made it clear he doesn’t expect the Redskins to win too many games this year, and neither should the fans. He just expects them to be competitive, at best, and if not, he said he would make even more changes.

Nothing in the Redskins first preseason game changed that assessment. Red Zone play calling is still atrocious.  The play calling as a whole is still bad, except for the run plays (that are at least a bit out of Gruden’s hands).

Watch the tape, Pierre Garcon has NEVER caught a deep pass in the years he has been a Redskin.  He’s taken short or middle route passes and gotten a lot of YAC, but never a long pass. Gruden seems to want to ignore Garcon’s weakness and hence I was not surprised at the big drop by Garcon.

The loss of Niles Paul is a huge blow to the team.  There goes 25% of the Red Zone plan. Hopefully they can trade Andre Roberts for a Tight End.

The Eagles looked unstoppable in their weekend game against the Colts. The ‘Skins looked like a high school team by comparison.

Nonetheless, there are reasons for long-term optimism. The draft class looks very good. The Defense looks improved. The Offensive Line looks improved. If Matt Jones can be healthy and if Gruden gets creative, Jones could serve as a virtual Tight End, a joker Running Back with great hands if you will. He has potential to be a big impact player if he can stay healthy with his style of running.

Redskins’ fans have to be patient. I think Gruden can survive a six-win season, but not if his play calling continues like the first preseason game.
