Just a few years ago, it appeared that the Washington Redskins were going to be a staple on prime time television. With RGIII taking the league by storm his rookie season, it appeared Washington would be on Sunday or Monday Night Football three or four times per season.
That expectation was short-lived as Griffin’s star has diminished and the Redskins no longer boast one of the league’s most popular and recognizable figures any longer. Griffin still holds potential, but injuries have derailed his short career and the suits at NBC and ESPN no longer view him as must-watch television.
So this season, the Redskins will have just one game on ESPN Monday Night Football and two games to be broadcasted on the NFL Network. In Week 3, they’ll play the New York Giants on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium with the game shown on CBS and the NFL Network. They’ll be back on prime time television on Week 13 when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Then three weeks later, they’ll travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles on Saturday night on the NFL Network.
All three games will be a part of DISH TV’s sports package so fans will be able to watch the Redskins prime time games for a low monthly rate of just $35. That’s much less expensive than the price of admission for tickets. The lone home game on Monday night against the Cowboys has an average ticket price of $324, according to TiqIQ.com. The cheapest ticket starts at $64 so you’d be able to get DISH TV for two months for the price of just oen ticket to the game.
There’s a lot of play to take place before the clash on Monday Night with the Cowboys, so that game could have very high stakes or no stakes at all. The Redskins don;t have particularly high expectations entering the season, but if Griffin can play at or close to the level he exhibited a few years ago, Washington will be in the playoff hunt. The Cowboys are coming off of a 12-4 campaign so they are expecting to take home the NFC East division once again.
Time will tell if Washington can make it to Week 13 and still have a playoff-worthy record. If so, perhaps we’ll see a few additional prime time games for them this season.
