At 4:00 PM ET today, we can end the inane sports media-on-a-deadline silliness that the Redskins have the most wanted quarterbacks in the league.
There is local civil unrest about Robert Griffin III. Local and national fans lobbed dismissive barbs at Kirk Cousins after losses to the Jets and the Falcons. Then, on the eve of the NFL trade deadline, it seemed that everyone proposed that teams would be foolish not to trade for Robert Griffin III or Kirk Cousins. Here are the two silliest:
Greg Garber proposed that the Bears trade Jay Cutler to Washington for Kirk Cousins and a third round Draft pick. (Trades we’d like to see….)
Well, of all the quarterbacks on the Redskins roster, Cousins has the highest trade value right now. Know what else we have right now? Intelligent general management.
Scot McCloughan is not likely to take on the remainder of Cutler’s 7-year, $126 million contract, for the bargain that is Kirk Cousins.
Cutler’s guaranteed 2015 salary is $15 million. Cousins is an economical $2.5 million.
While he is a free agent next season, Cousins next year should command a two-year “show me” contract at over $12 million per year, if he performs well enough this season. His best shot could come right here in the DMV if there is continuity on the coaching staff and continuing upgrades in young talent.
Garber wrote this from the Bears’ viewpoint. Chicago fans would love to dump Cutler and his over-weight contract and the Bears could use the Redskins’ Draft pick. Daniel Snyder has been snookered into these type deals before … before the Redskins got intelligent team management.
As for Cutler, well lets say that Rex Grossman played in more Super Bowls with Da’ Bears than Cutler has.
This is a good place to remind you that “somebody” on the Patriots called Cousins the best QB on the roster when the Pats and ‘Skins held joint practice at 2014 training camp. Bill Belichick embellished those thoughts this week before the Redskins fly to Boston to play those same Patriots.

Adam Schefter actually suggested that the Chiefs trade QB Chase Daniel to the Redskins for Robert Griffin III. (Five trades that should happen, but won’t.)
Schefter is smarter than this. He had to come up with something; Griffin has the highest name recognition of any third string quarterback. Oh well!
The Redskins took a hard look at Daniel before the 2009 season. They released him on the last cut down day. Schefter must have forgotten that. A trade won’t happen, just as his headline said.

The silence from real NFL GM’s is deafening.
ESPN’s John Keim writes that the Redskins received no offers for RGIII on the edge of the trade deadline. That’s not surprising; there were similar stories last preseason when the team benched RG. If a trade were going to happen, it would have happened then when new coaches could still work with him on the new playbook.
You can trade for any other position in mid-season and that player might be a productive starter. Not quarterbacks. Mid-season is the worst time to trade for QBs. Coaches need to work with them from the beginning of OTAs.
Hog Heaven is not convinced the Redskins even want to dump RGIII. I’ll tell you why in some future post.
