Don’t connect any dots yet, but a sports writer-capologist thinks Mike Shanahan could make a play for Kirk Cousins, if Mike lands with a new NFL team.
Mike Shanahan as 49ers head coach would add to Kirk Cousins' leverage. He could push for an offer sheet even if Cousins gets franchised.

Like fans everywhere, Redskins fans think all the leverage is with the team in these free agent contract matters. Contracts are set by market forces and not by the team … unless the Redskins are still into a Daniel Snyder “don’t let them leave the building” deal.
In the interval since Joel Corry’s (Twitter: @corryjoel) tweet and this story, Chip Kelly has been named 49ers head coach. But Big Mike may land somewhere, and he is not the only team official with an interest in our Cousins. Well, ours when he is under contract for 2016.
On the remote chance that the ‘Skins lose Cousins, then Robert Griffin III is still under contract to Washington. Griffin would be a top two or three QB free agent if he hits the open market.
Don’t laugh and don’t gag. I’m taking notes on how GM Scot McCloughan negotiates his way through this.
An extended deal for Cousins is the most likely outcome, but none of that is certain.
Be certain of this, however; McCloughan will finalize a deal with Cousins before he actually releases Griffin.
