So much controversy surrounds Robert Griffin III that it’s sure to be a subject of a 14-part FX series someday.
Writers at the WaPOST surveyed NFL talent evaluators about Griffin’s prospects for the future and DC Sports Bog put it in the form of a virtual round table discussion.
This Adam Schefter quote stopped me cold.
“Who’s interested in RGIII? I don’t know that there’s a logical speculative landing place for RGIII the way there is for Johnny Manziel.”
Are you kidding me? While I do not have Schefter’s access to teams, I do not accept that there is a logical landing spot for Manziel and none for RG.
The rest of the Sports Bog story covered what Griffin must do as a football player (develop as a pocket passer), chance to be a starter (uncertain), next contract (short-term “prove it” deal at $5M per year).
We are still RGIII fanboys who believe that he will land on his feet and do well – not as spectacularly as his rookie year, though.
We do not buy that Coach Jay Gruden has a personal animus towards Griffin. it’s Gruden’s offense is not friendly to him. RG’s best shot is to start anew, from scratch, elsewhere.
Yet there is this nagging feeling that the Redskins (owner) is not so keen on releasing Griffin. That $16M contract extension the ‘Skins gave Griffin force their hand, however. We blame Daniel Snyder for that move, too.
Schefter has the same line of thought. Sports Bog quoted Schefter from an interview on Mike & Mike:
“You’re working under the assumption that you’re certain that Daniel Snyder, whose actions cannot be underestimated, is going to want to part ways with him. Daniel Snyder loves the guy. Loves the guy. Has gone to bat for the guy. Now, it makes no sense that they could keep him, certainly not under the contract the way it stands right now.”
Maybe you can hear the silent “but,…” after that.
Everyone expects rationality now. Kirk Cousins gets a long-term deal as starting quarterback and the Redskins say nice things about Griffin as he walks out the door.
When have the Redskins ever been rational about Robert Griffin III?
