Hog Heaven briefly debated blog contributor Scott Hirsch on the merits of the Honey Badger, Tyrann Mathieu.
The Redskins needed a safety since Sean Taylor’s death (2007) and Scott argued that Mathieu fit the bill.
No way, countered old school me. Mathieu emerged from from a difficult family circumstance in a high crime city. One should not hold that against anyone, but Mathieu succumbed to his background while at LSU where he made headlines as much for his off-field dependencies as for his on-field heroics. LSU even kicked him to the curb.
That whole Mike Shanahan vs. Albert Haynesworth thing did not inspire confidence in Washington’s skills with challenging players either.
Even with London Fletcher in the locker room, Mathieu was as much a threat to degrade team culture as he was to help it. Fletcher was busy mentoring Robert Griffin III at the time.
Grandma always said leopards don’t change their spots and chips don’t fly far from the tree.
Except when they do.

Mathieu beat his drug dependency. He denounced violence in his hometown New Orleans at personal risk to himself. He is a positive for his team. He found his maturity in less time than it took Adam (the former PacMan) Jones to do the same.
That is a big payoff for the Cardinals who took the chance the Redskins would not. The Cards made Mathieu the highest paid safety in the league today. /smh
Hog Heaven was wrong about that guy. Washington selected CB David Amerson 18 picks before Arizona selected Mathieu. The Redskins still need a safety.
