How he was acquired: Traded by the Pistons to the Nets for Steve Blake on July 13th, 2015
2014-15 season recap: Miller — a teammate of former Net Cory Jefferson at Baylor, spent last season with three different NBA teams (the Nuggets, Kings and Pistons) but only appeared in games for Sacramento and Detroit after playing for Denver from 2012-14. The forward played in six games for the Kings and four for the Pistons, and was shuttled to and from both teams’ D-League affiliates — the Reno Bighorns and Grand Rapids Drive — multiple times without making much of an impact.
Expected role: Essentially, the reason the Nets made the trade for Miller was to get rid of Blake’s guaranteed contract and assume the 22-year-old’s non-guaranteed deal. He’s an athletic guy — similar mold to Jefferson, who was cut this summer — but has yet to establish many NBA-level skills in his three-plus pro seasons so it’s doubtful he even makes the Nets and even less likely he contributes at all this season.
Best-case scenario: He makes the team and gives a similar burst off the bench as Cory Jefferson did on the defensive end, hopefully without many ugly jump shot attempts.
Worst-case scenario: He doesn’t make the team and is either cut — the Nets wouldn’t lose much, if any, money in this case — or loaned out to a D-League team — remember that the Nets don’t have their own affiliate — for a possible call-up later in the season.
General thoughts: Quincy Miller is on the Nets mainly because of his unique contract structure, with his basketball ability being a relative side-note. But, he’s in Brooklyn at this juncture, so maybe the young forward who has already criss-crossed the country during his short NBA career can latch on with the rebuilding Nets.
