How he was acquired: Signed by the Nets as a free agent on September 10th, 2015
2014-15 season recap: After not playing a game during the 2013-14 season — he was signed by the Bulls and promptly cut before the season started — Jones, a New Jersey native, was picked up by the Jazz last summer, but was waived in October. Then, he went to the D-League and ended up signing with the Clippers, but was rarely used in Los Angeles, and when he got in games, it was usually garbage time.
Expected role: At this point in his career, the 34-year-old doesn’t have much left in the tank to contribute on the floor, but is a needed veteran on this rebuilding team. There’s a chance he doesn’t make the team but I wouldn’t be surprised if he stuck around for awhile — a la Jerry Stackhouse in the 2012-13 season — and played here and there but mostly served as a mentor to Brooklyn’s younger guards.
Best-case scenario: Stackhouse in his short Nets tenure. Stack, who is now an assistant coach with the Raptors, was approaching 40 years of age but still managed to have some big games for Brooklyn and helped swing a few wins. Toward the end of the season, though, he played less and less but was still a key figure in the Nets’ locker room. Jones could be the same.
Worst-case scenario: He doesn’t play and just is a stabilizing force in the mercurial Brooklyn locker room.
General thoughts: Don’t expect much from Dahntay Jones at his age and declining ability, but don’t underrate what he can bring to the table off the court.
