The hearings for a grievance case filed over the NHL’s rejection of Ilya Kovalchuk’s 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils ended today in Boston.

Richard Bloch, a New Jersey native and systems arbitrator for the case, has until the end of the business day on Monday to submit his ruling to both the league and the NHLPA.
If Bloch rules that the NHL rejection can stand, then Kovalchuk immediately becomes an unrestricted free agent. If he rules that the NHL’s rejection was incorrect, the league will have to allow the contract.
Bloch can also rule if the Devils intentionally attempted to circumvent the salary cap. If he included this in a decision for the NHL’s rejection, both the Devils and Kovalchuk could face fines. However, it is expected that Bloch will only rule if the rejection should stand or not.
