Why did John Sterling make such a bad home run call for Curtis Granderson?

Quick John Sterling story – I met him at the Yankees 2009 World Series movie premiere, and thanked him for entertaining me with his broadcasts. He described his role on the radio to me as a “labor of love.” Just wish he’d love these obscure theater references a little less!
