You see these kinds of stories all the time, but this one sort of made me weepy. Chappell did a beautiful job writing it.
Instead, Sanders pulled up a chair next to J.D.’s bed. He held J.D.’s hand, stroked his head. He tried to connect.
“I wanted to get to know him and I wanted him to get to know me a little better,” Sanders said.
“All he really knows is the football player he sees on the field. I just sat down and held his hand and gave him a quick synopsis of who I am and where I’m from.”
At one point, Sanders added, “I told him, ‘You’re about to have me crying.’ He was so excited that he kind of got shaken up and got into a little bit of pain. That was tough to see, but he’s a tough kid.”
