As it was, the Rams, Raiders and Chargers were all in the running for a move to Los Angeles, however, the Chargers and Raiders make the most sense. Oakland has been playing in the rundown O.Co. Coliseum, which they share with the Athletics, for way too long. Thus, an upgrade in facilities is clearly needed. As for the Chargers, they have been told that plans for a new stadium in the San Diego area is highly unlikely and much like the Raiders, their stadium can hardly keep up with today’s NFL playgrounds. San Diego would also have the misfortune of having the team that does move into Los Angeles take away viewership, sponsors and profitability. The old adage goes “if you can’t beat ’em, then join em'” and that is exactly what the Chargers will do. They know they cannot hold their own against an L.A. fan base so why not become one. Finally, Oakland and San Diego make the most sense geographically as well. The fan bases will stay in California as well as the tax revenue.
As for the Rams, they are likely to remain in St. Louis. It was speculated that by having ties to Los Angeles, the team was the L.A. Rams from 1946-1994, the Rams would be given some kind of renaissance. However, this now seems unlikely. It will be interesting to see if the ownership group, who recently said St. Louis cannot “sustain three franchises” will look to relocate in the near future.
