As the Cincinnati Reds enter the month of May, one thing is key for them to win…the bullpen. With a 5.13 ERA this season, the bullpen continues to struggle. Cincinnati needs to look to outside options to help hold down the lead in the late innings. In my opinion, here are some relievers I think the Reds should make a move for.
One person that comes to mind is Minnesota Twins’ reliever, Kevin Jepsen. Although Jepsen has had a rough start to 2016, his track record shows he will bounce back and have a great campaign. Last year, with the Tampa Bay Rays and Minnesota Twins, Jepsen had a 3-6 record and a 2.33 ERA.
Another reliever able to add depth to the Reds’ bullpen is Jeanmar Gomez from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are not competing this season, meaning the team will be likely to deal. Gomez would be a help to any team’s bullpen thanks to his 3.01 ERA last season and his strong start this year. Gomez is signed through 2018, making him very controllable if Cincinnati is to make a deal. A third possible pitcher that would add depth to the Cincinnati bullpen is Kevin Quackenbush from the San Diego Padres. Quackenbush is versatile and would be available to pitch in a variety of different situations. Although his best year was in 2014, when he had a 2.48 ERA, I can see Quackenbush being a nice addition for the Reds in 2016 and beyond. He is signed through 2021.If the Cincinnati Reds could land at least one of these reliever, I feel they will have a better chance at locking down close games and working their way to winning a World Series.
