The Raiders have now added a sixth quarterback to their training camp roster with the addition of Charlie Frye, the Raider website has confirmed.
Frye worked out for the Raiders in March but left without a contract.
Quarterbacks already on the Raider roster include; JaMarcus Russell, Jeff Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski, Andrew Walter, and Danny Southwick.
Frye spent all of 2008 and most of 2007 with the Seahawks, after being traded to Seattle from the Browns at the beginning of the 07 season.
Frye was originally a third round draft pick of the Browns in 05 and started five games in his rookie season. In 2006, he had his best season in which he started 13 games and completed 252 passes for 2,454 yards. He was thought by most Browns fans as the future of the franchise. But he was replaced by Derek Anderson after first game of 07, was traded, and has been buried in the depth chart ever since.
Sound familiar?
Andrew Walter was drafted in the 3rd round that same year and also had his best season in 06 and was thought to be the future of the Raiders. But he was playing behind a terrible offensive line and he struggled. In 07 the Raiders signed Dante Culpepper and drafted JaMarcus Russell and Walter hasn’t hardly seen the field since.
It has been speculated for quite a while that Andrew Walter is on the trading block. He is unhappy with his fall from “The next big thing” to “clip board holder” and the Raiders would like to get something in return for his still untapped skills.
Six quarterbacks is indeed a lot but it is not quite the same situation as another pirate named team with similar colored helmets. Despite that two of these quarterbacks, Jeff Garcia and Bruce Gradkowski, were Orange creamsicle pirates just last season.
Signing Frye could be most telling as to just how much Gradkowski is stinking up the joint. Bringing in Frye adds competition and insurance. If Gradkowski doesn’t start finding his accuracy then he will be released and Frye will be the third quarterback.
And let’s face it, Danny Southwick is bound for the practice squad.
So welcome to the Raiders Charlie Frye. I hope you can play Gradkowski out of a clip board.
