Garcia could draw interest from Denver, others

The Raiders released Jeff Garcia on Saturday as part of the final roster cuts. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, if you believed Garcia was supposed to be kept as the solution if JaMarcus Russell’s play is horrendous.

Garcia was expected to compete, but eventually warm up the bench and only play in the event that Russell was sent back to it. Garcia may not sign with a team until after the regular season starts, so his salary would not be guaranteed, being on the opening day roster.

Adequate situations for Garcia would be Washington, Green Bay and Denver- who may all show some significant interest in Garcia. Washington placed Colt Brennan on injured reserve today, and Green Bay doesn’t have any starting experience behind Aaron Rodgers. Denver could show some real interest with quarterbacks Chris Simms and starter Kyle Orton both suffering from injuries.

Garcia vs. Russell would have be interesting, especially if they were to sign with an AFC West rival and face the Raiders twice this year. There’s no need for Garcia to jump the gun on his future just yet, he may think about things for a day or two while listening to some offers, or he could just decide to hang up the cleats. He has had the injury bug his last couple years in the league, so that could be one of the reasons to walk away.

Luckily for Garcia though, a few teams could really use an experienced vet with a good track record right about now.
