After coming off a loss in a game that many believe they should have won on Monday night, the Oakland Raiders traveled to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to take on the Chiefs and show the rest of the league that they can finish down the stretch of a game. The problem for most of the game was ‘starting’ to play well, rather than ‘finishing’ a well-played game.
The Kansas City Chiefs held the ball for nearly twice as long as the Raiders (T.O.P. – 38:39 to Oakland’s 21:21), gained over twice as many yards (409 to 166), and came up with a late touchdown with only 2:38 to go in the game to take a 10-6 lead–yet they still ended up losing to a Raiders team that lost Nnamdi Asomugha, Hiram Eugene, and Darrius Heyward-Bey during the course of the game to cramps and dehydration.
JaMarcus Russell struggled the entire day, but took the ball at his own 31-yard line and guided the struggling Raiders 69 yards for the final scoring drive of the game. The drive was capped off by a Darren McFadden 5-yard run around the left end to put the Raiders on top for good 13-10.
The win was a rarity. The Raiders won a game in which they gained less than 200 yards while giving up over 400 on defense for the first time ever. Russell (7-24, 29.2%) is the first quarterback to win a game where he completed less than 30% of his passes, (with 20+ attempts), since Jake Delhomme (7-27, 25.9%) did it to Oakland last season in a 17-6 victory at the coliseum. He’s also the second quarterback since 1997, (Delhomme the first), to perform that feat.
The star of the game for the Raiders was Michael Huff. Huff picked off Matt Cassel twice, once in the redzone. On the Chiefs’ final offensive play, Huff was able to come over intended receiver Jake O’Connell and break up a possible first down pass play to end the game. Greg Ellis, signed from Dallas in the offseason, had two sacks in the game, including a sack on the Chiefs’ second to last offensive play of the game.
