Cable said that Holland will return kickoffs. He returned kickoffs in the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks last year. “Yeah, actually did it preseason of last year, Seattle. Had like three returns for 70-something yards. So I’m familiar with it.” Besides the NFL, he has been a regular on returns at other levels of football, “I’ve been doing kick returns for a long time – high school, all through college so I’m very familiar with it.”
If he sees the field outside of special teams, it will be his first time playing defense in a game since he was a freshman at Louisiana Tech. He would be playing corner in the Oakland man-to man scheme. He is confident that he will be able to contribute on defense despite only practicing on that side of the ball for two weeks. “I feel really good about it. I have a great tutor in Nnamdi Asomugha, Michael Huff, those guys take their job very seriously and I sit back and watch what they do, listen to the coaches make the defensive calls and I’ve just got to be there to make the plays.”
Cable has confidence in the second year player, “He’s ready because he would line up at corner and play that. Based on what we do, there’s not a lot to it really when you’re playing man coverage.”
This move was made in part due to the injury to Hiram Eugene and the recovery of Justin Fargas. It is quite possible that Louis Rankin could be the player who will be moved to make room. Rankin was not used as a runner at all in his two games, and he was mediocre as a kick returner.
Another possibility would be Nick Miller to the injured reserve. Miller is out for at least another three weeks with the broken bone in his lower shin, and has yet to prove anything at the NFL level. The franchise is high on Miller and having him on the IR would keep him under their control into next year.
