Fallout from season to begin

The speculation is already running high as to whether or not Tom Cable will retain his job as head coach into the 2010 season. He has a meeting scheduled with owner Al Davis for next week, and it is at that time he will likely be notified of his fate. Cable’s job is not the only issue that the Raiders face in the looming offseason. They are a team that is on an incredible slide into oblivion, and need to get things turned around. They have to decide what they ae going to be doing with their franchise quarterback who has been a major disappointment. They also have free agents who will need to have decisions made upon them.

The feel of things seem to point towards Tom Cable not returning, which would be a mistake. He has the team holding together and fighting for a victory rather than each other, which is a marked improvement. Bring him an offensive coordinator and give him another offseason to build the team.

Last year, the two internal free agents that dominated the discussion were punter Shane Lechler and defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha. In an interesting bit of symmetry, the big two this season are kicker Sebastian Janikowski and defensive end Richard Seymour. Janikowski deosn’t have as impressive of a resume as Lechler, but he is one of the top kickers in the league. Seymour was acquired from the New Englad Patriots immediately prior to the season for a 2011 first round draft choice. Having given up that high of a pick, the Raiders must find a way to keep him on the roster.

The biggest question mark is hanging squarely over the head of JaMarcus Russell. He was selected at the top of the 2007 draft, and has been a major disappointment. He was benched after week nine and the team improved under backups Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye. He is owed around $10 million dollars for next season, but with it being a capless year, he can be released with out concern for any bonus acceleration.

It is going to be a wild offseason, and TFDS will be there to cover it.
