Clancy Pendergast, we hardly knew ya

Raiders defensive backs coach Clancy Pendergast has resigned to take the defensive coordinator position with the Cal Bears.

Pendergast had only been a member of the Raiders’s staff 10 days before moving up the street to Berkeley. He was expected to fill the role left behind when Willie Brown retired earlier this year.

Last year at this time, the Raiders had hired former Cal coach Jim Michalczik as their offensive line coach mere days after he had accepted an offensive coordinator position with the University of Washington, so this type of rapid move by coaches between the NFL and the NCAA is not unprecidented.

Prior to coming to Oakland, Pendergast had been the defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals where he was fired after they lost the Super Bowl to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
