The Raiders grab another corner in this years draft. They grab Michigan State CB Jeremy Ware with their first pick of the 7th round (215 overall). The Raiders were looking to add some depth at corner with the release of oft-injured corner John Bowie. Bowie was infamed by many fans as the player taken with the pick the Raiders received when they shipped Randy Moss to the Patriots.
Here is a little about the Raiders newest acquisition:
He is a fifth year senior out of Michigan State. He was originally enrolled at South Carolina in the fall of 2005, where he red-shirted his freshman season on the Gamecock football team which prompted him to transfer to Michigan State.
In his first ever career start, Ware recorded a career-high eight tackles and tied a school record with five pass break-ups. He would appear in 12 games as a junior while starting four. As a senior, had a career-high 52 tackles and was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the coaches.
He is not a typical speed guy at corner as he runs a marginal 4.61 40 yard dash. He is described as a hard hitter and takes a lot of pride in it. “Making big plays and hitting hard really gets everyone’s energy flowing,” said Ware. “On defense you really want to make big plays to swing the momentum and get your guys going.”
Hard to say what the Raiders’ plans are for Ware. Doubtful it is safety though. The Raiders are set at strong safety and due to his 5’10” stature, free safety is unlikely. They may just see a guy they can coach up. I suppose that is what the 7th round is for right? But this pick still leaves the Raiders without a big DT in the middle of the defensive line and a fullback.
