The Oakland Raiders have signed quarterback Colt Brennan after injuries in that position.
After a morning session where two quarterbacks sat on the sidelines not practicing due to injuries, it is not surprising they would consider adding a quarterback. Charlie Frye missed his second session after he sustained a wrist injury in the morning session on Thursday. After the morning session Cable commented on the injury situation, “It doesn’t seem to be anything major yet with either one of them. We’ll just see where they’re at this afternoon and go from there.”
This likely indicates that the injuries may be more serious than initially expected. At the very least, it is a hedge since there are two out of four quarterbacks hurt.
Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski are virtual locks for one and two on the depth chart respectively. Frye and Kyle Boller are battling for the third quarterback position.
So far in camp Boller has been the better performer, but Frye is the better system fit. The addition of Brennan is a low risk move for the Raiders to get them another young arm in camp.
Brennan had been cut earlier in the offseason by the Washington Redskins.
Brennan had a storied career at Hawaii in June Jones’s offensive system winning the WAC player of the year twice. He holds over 30 NCAA Division I records including most touchdown passes in a single season, highest career completion percentage, and most 400 yard games. He also won the Sammy Baugh award in 2006.
Brennan was considered a first round prospect after the 2006 season. He had a stellar regular season, but some draft experts started expressing concern about the lack of competition he faced in the WAC. This concern was highlighted when he had dismal performance in the Sugar Bowl, and he went sliding way down draft boards, with the Redskins eventually selecting him in the sixth round.
