The Oakland Raiders had the perfect opportunity to get back to back wins when they entered Candlestick Park to play the 49ers. However, once again they could not get it done.
The stars seemed to align for the Raiders to get their back to back wins and turn their fortunes around.
The Raiders were coming off of a huge win that snapped a 13 game losing streak against their rival from Southern California. They were facing a team that was reeling at 0-5 in a “road” game where they could still sleep in their own beds.
They failed to do so.
This extends their streak of losing after a win to seven. Unlike the 2009 season where the losses after wins tended towards blowouts, this season the wins have been followed up with sloppy games where they lost and should have won.
After their week two win over the St Louis Rams, the Raiders traveled to Arizona and lost to the Cardinals. The final nail in the coffin was a missed filed goal by Sebastian Janikowksi, but it was a series of mistakes throughout the game that cost the team in the end.
The Raiders had another slop-fest fill of head-scratching moments and an offensive output that harkened back to the worst of the JaMarcus Russell era. In fact, that was the worst Raiders offensive output since week five of 2009 when they only amassed 124 yards against the New York Giants.
Defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha didn’t have an explanation for the lack of back to back wins. “It’s not like we get overconfident, It’s not like we feel like the win wasn’t relevant so we’re not a good team. It’s just something we have to do. We just have to win that second game.”
Defensive end Richard Seymour, who joined the team right before the 2009 season, wasn’t going to focus on the streak, “I don’t know about all the history, we just take it one game at a time. I don’t look at the past and I don’t look at the future. It’s all about the opponent we faced today. Obviously we didn’t get the job done, but we will look at the film and move forward next week. It’s going to Denver it’s a game with in the division so we will need to put our best foot forward.”
Receiver Louis Murphy had a bigger picture view of the loss. “Yeah. We wanted to put two back-to-back. We’re going to have another chance to do it. We’ve got as divisional game next week. That’s our goal is to win the division. We’re 1-0 in the division, going to Denver. We’ve got to come out with a win. “
If the Oakland Raiders want to break out of their funk, they absolutely have to get over that hump and start to win two, then three, in a row. Even more so, they have to win the games they are supposed to win. Twice now, they have had the table set to do just that and have been unable to do so.
Until they can put things together and sustain a winning streak, it is going to be more heartbreaking years for the Raider Nation.
